Moving Storage -- Temporary Storage and Long Term Moving Units
You just sold your home and now have a few items you can’t or didn’t give away. Maybe someone will use them one day; so how about putting them in public storage until we decide what to do with them. Many moving companies can accommodate your personal storage items but if they can’t there should be a public storage unit in your new neighborhood.
Long-term and Short-term Storage Units
You will need to figure out how much storage you need. When the home moving crew packs your household goods make sure to have them place your storage items last. This way they can drop off your storage items directly to the unit (if you have previously arranged this with the moving company).
For your storage solutions, rent a small unit and pack it from top to bottom. It is easier to do this if you use the same size boxes. Be sure to label your boxes so you know exactly what is inside. Place plastic on the ground, it will protect your boxes, however be sure not to put the boxes directly against the wall, create an aisle so you can move the boxes later if need be. If you place furniture in your unit, make sure you cover it with plastic or furniture pads. Have a good lock on your door and remember to keep inventory of what you have in your unit.
Some storage units have climate control to help protect your personal belongings. Be sure to read your contract carefully. Find out who is responsible for missing or damaged items in your unit? What are the hours of operation and what days are they open. Most are accessible 7 days a week; however you should make sure of the hours.
Most units are charged on a month-to-month basis so you are able to move out whenever you like. If you decide to keep your storage unit for longer than a month, see if they will give you a long-term discount, most personal storage units will. However, you may need to give them 30-days notice if you plan to evacuate your unit. Be sure to see if they provide insurance. You can also check with your homeowner’s policy to see if your public storage unit is covered.
Moving and Storage Companies
There are moving rental units, which is a clever idea. You rent a moving unit and have it delivered to your location. Load it up and store the whole unit at the storage company’s location. This way you avoid the hassle of loading and then unloading your household goods. This form of storage is not for everyone, but someone moving from a small apartment/home could probably utilize this service. They are called relocubes.
This is just a quick overview of personal storage. Take a look at the internet for a storage unit near you. |
